Keith Matthews has arrived
from Central Gwinnett High School in
Lawrenceville to lead the new West Forsyth High School band and music programs. Mr.
Matthews is no stranger to Georgia and its heritage of creating and
developing outstanding band and music programs. A native of Marietta, Mr.
Matthews prepped at Sprayberry High School and followed his passion for
music to Furman University where he gained a bachelors degree in music
education. He then matriculated to the distant state of Arizona to learn
music performance (trumpet) at Arizona State University in Tempe.
Mr. Matthews began his
professional teaching career soon after graduation from Arizona State. While
still residing in the Grand Canyon State, he supported the efforts of the Gilbert High School
Marching Band in its successful attempt to become the Arizona representative
at the 2001 Presidential Inauguration for George W. Bush.
After returning to the Atlanta area Mr. Matthews taught music while assisting the
band programs at both Woodstock and Norcross High Schools. During his tenure at
Norcross, Mr. Matthews shared in the development of the success of the
Norcross Wind Symphony. This highly valued music group was selected to
perform at the esteemed University of Georgia January
Music Festival.
Mr. Matthews is currently completing his 10th year in
education, the past two at the aforementioned Gwinnett County scholastic
institution. Additionally,
Mr. Matthews is an active clinician, adjudicator and performer in the Atlanta area.
Richard Gill, Principal of West Forsyth High School, expressed elation at
the selection of Mr. Matthews to this most important fine arts post. "Upon
meeting Mr. Matthews," related Mr. Gill, "I was immensely impressed with his
vision of excellence for the West Forsyth music program. I have always
valued a strong band and I am convinced that Mr. Matthews is the perfect fit
for our school and community as we help him create the finest program in the
state."
Mr. Matthews is most
excited to become part of a school system that has achieved a history of
creating strong band programs in the various schools. He plans to bring
recognition to
Forsyth County and West Forsyth
High School by developing a
band program which is strong in quantity and rich in quality. "A large and
competitive marching band will put West Forsyth High School
'on the map'
throughout the state of Georgia," explained Mr. Matthews. "An active and
talented concert band program will enable each student to become the finest
of musicians while gaining achievement in all aspects of school and life."
Mr. Matthews continued
his philosophical view with, "Members of the West
Forsyth Band Program will be encouraged to participate in many
music opportunities on and off campus including community groups, honor
bands and the Georgia All-State Band. The most important role of the band is
to be the 'heart and soul'
of our new school community through leadership and spirit."
Those
who choose to become a part of the West Forsyth music and band programs will
benefit immediately by experiencing the leadership opportunities and
feeling the spirit
created by this dynamic new instructor!
